Welcome to your home from home – Taigh an Clachair – a beautiful stone cottage, built by a local stone mason, located near the quiet village of Lybster in the county of Caithness.

Wendy and Ray fell in love with this fabulous part of North Scotland following a holiday in the area and hope that you will too, as have the many guests who have stayed at Taigh An Clachair in the past.

Lybster is delightfully placed on the south-east coast of Caithness, in the Highland region of Scotland. It has good facilities including two hotels, with bars and a restaurant, post office and newsagents, well-stocked convenience shop and a 9 hole golf course. Whether your interests lie with active pursuits or just taking it easy, your needs can be readily satisfied in this lovely part of Scotland.

During the 19th century it was a major centre for fishing and its past success is reflected in the width of its main street! The small harbour is still active today, though on a much smaller scale. Rolls filled with freshly caught local crab can be enjoyed in the harbour side Waterlines Visitor Centre along with other refreshments.

Taigh An Clachair is situated in a quiet position just a ten minute walk from the village. With spectacular views of the sea and distant mountains, our cottage provides the ideal location for a holiday or short break.

The region of Caithness is a unique part of Scotland. With spectacular scenery, an abundance of wildlife and steeped in history, it forms the far north east part of the Highland region, with a climate drier than that of the western highlands and generally flatter topography. It offers the visitor excellent opportunities for walking, bird watching, fishing, cycling, surfing and exploring archaeological sites. Wick and Thurso the main towns, and they both offer a good selection of shops and amenities.

If you are looking to get away from it all, the unspoilt rural landscape of Caithness and its beautiful coastline offer the perfect destination for true relaxation; away from the tourist hustle and bustle. There are miles of sandy, deserted beaches to explore; along with an abundance of wildlife, particularaly sea birds and seals.

Taigh An Clachair is a stone built property set in 3/4 acres of private grounds. Tastefully decorated and well-furnished to a high standard with all modern conveniences including:

Things To Do

Our Recommendations

Wildlife Cruise from John O’Groats – opportunity to see plenty of seabirds including puffins, plus grey seals and even possibly killer whales! One of their routes takes you up close to the spectacular geological feature, the famous Stacks of Duncansby.

Whaligo Steps – 365 steps down (and back up) to a former harbour, lovely spot to enjoy a picnic or have lunch in the café at the top of the steps.

Drive part of route 500 (www.northcoast500.com) Scotland’s answer to route 66! Head across to the north coast at the very top of Scotland and enjoy a different type of scenery to that of the east coast. Explore the various peninsulas around Tongue.

TERMS & CONDITIONS OF RENTAL FOR TAIGH AN CLACHAIR, LYBSTER

1. The property is available to the hirer from 4.00 p.m. on the agreed day of arrival until 10.00 a.m. on the agreed day of departure. Holiday lets normally run from Saturday 4.00 p.m. to Saturday 10.00 a.m. unless specifically arranged and agreed otherwise.2. A non-refundable deposit of 20% of the total amount to be paid is required when the booking is made, with the balance payable one month before commencement of the let. If the booking is made one month or less before the commencement of the holiday, then the full rent should be paid at the time of booking. When the balance of the rent is paid, final details of the property, with routing and key holder information, will be forwarded.
3. In the event of cancellation, after the full rental has been paid, a refund of up to and no more than 80% of the total paid may be refunded at the discretion of the owners.
4. In no circumstances may the number of people occupying the property exceed three, unless agreed in advance with the owners. No pets allowed unless agreed in advance with the owners.
5. The Hirer agrees to keep the property and all the fitments, furniture, equipment and other contents in or on the property in the like state of repair and condition as at the commencement of the holiday let and will make good any damage, breakage or loss that may occur during the period of the holiday let. The property and all fitments, furniture, utensils and equipment etc. must be left in a clean and tidy condition at the conclusion of the period of the holiday let.
6. Confirmation of a booking will be deemed to be an acceptance of these conditions and a confirmation of the details and conditions supplied at the time of booking. The Hirer is responsible for ensuring that all persons occupying the property comply with all the conditions in all respects. The property is occupied strictly on the basis that the accommodation is for holiday use only and that no right to remain in the property after the end of the holiday period booked exists for the Hirer. All persons will vacate the property at the conclusion of the period of the holiday.
7. The owners reserve the right to cancel the booking if situations outside reasonable expectation or control arise, e.g. the destruction or damage of the property, which cannot reasonably be remedied to a satisfactory standard before the start of your holiday through fire, flood, explosion, storm or other weather damage, break-in, criminal damage or any similar event beyond the owners’ control. In the event of such a situation a full refund will be made.
8. The facilities provided at the property are solely for the reasonably use of those people the owners have agreed can stay at the property.
9. The garage area of the property is private and is not included in the let.
10. In the interest of safety, any damage or defect of the property or its contents should be notified to the owners (or caretakers) immediately.

How to find us

Taigh an Clachair is situated just off the A99, near Lybster.

From the south, from Inverness take the A9, signposted Wick and Thurso. This is a good ‘A’ road that is a pleasure to drive, with many spectacular views. At Latheron take the A99, signposted Wick.

Wick is the nearest station and if you have time to spare this is a very picturesque way to arrive. There is a regular service from Inverness, but it takes just over 4 hours.

  • Wick is the closest airport. Flybe and Eastern Airlines operate scheduled flights in and out of Wick.
  • Inverness Airport is an easy drive away with more flights than Wick. EasyJet, BMI, British Airways, FlyBe, Ryan Air, Eastern Airways, and Aer Arann all operate scheduled flights.
  • Car hire is available at the airport from Avis, Hertz and others
